Incidents of Facile Adaptation
2022
Multi-channel video installation based around the proto-cinematic apparatus of the zoetrope. As the spectator approaches the installation, they are met by a swelling sound meant to provoke their curiosity and encourage further exploration into the space.
Ultimately, the Spectator is met by a barrier that they must decide whether or not they are willing to cross. Viewing the work from the outside, the spectator has a wide view of the Image as it swirls inside but their perspective is always blocked and/ or inhibited by their position to the pedestals. Viewing the work after crossing the threshold gives the spectator a new perspective and encompasses them in the Image, as well as changing their sonic experience of the work when they enter the zone of the parabolic speaker, changing the dynamic of their position to the work. Spectacle is overcome by critique as the Image settles into an increasing flow, distorting the pastorals of historic landscape painting and creating new-scapes.
